I love birds of all shapes and sizes, and there is something especially fun about the pelican. I first saw them as cartoons with enormous beak pouches filled with fish and seawater. It wasn’t until my teenage years that I saw them in Florida, and later during college I enjoyed spotting them flying along the shorelines of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I’ve seen them converge on piers, waddling around and sunning themselves, and I’ve seen them dive into the ocean to scoop up fish. I always enjoy spotting a squadron of brown pelicans gliding above the Atlantic Ocean off the beaches.
I decided it would be fun to paint a flying pelican motif, and the one pictured is on its way to a family who has a home in Corolla, NC (one of the northernmost towns on the OBX). This custom watercolor painting would be a great gift idea for someone who has a beach home or other abode where pelicans are found.
I use Winsor & Newton artist’s grade watercolor paints, 140 pound Arches cold pressed paper, and an acid free mat, which make for a long lasting keepsake. Please see the listing for more info on how you can customize this original artwork with your name of choice and color scheme. This Corolla-Flying Pelican painting was done in the TURQUOISE-ULTRAMARINE scheme.
